Day 34: 14 Miles of Walking in Vienna

10.26.21

Today I hit my new walking record of 14 miles! (My previous was in Stockholm with 13). I did start my day in a bad mood, which definitely got better throughout the day. I woke up super congested and super sick and just bodily exhausted. However, I was determined not to sit around and feel bad about myself

So, I started my day at the Leopold museum which is a super famous art museum. It was super cool and the artwork was amazing, but I didn’t really immerse myself in it much, or as much as I should have. I couldn’t concentrate because I couldn’t stop yawning and I was holding in coughs and sniffles. I am not going to cough loudly in a quiet museum! Especially during Covid times!

I knew coffee would solve a lot of my issues so I walked around old town Vienna to find a place. It was hard to find a good cafe because they were all so fancy since nice cafes are a huge part of Viennese culture! I settled on a chain- illy- where I got a cappuccino and tiramisu.

I then took the tram to the Sigmund Freud museum which was so interesting! I loved getting a deeper look into his life and to be in his area of work and home.

From there, but walked to the Vienna Crime museum. It was very cool and very descriptive, but unfortunately, 75% of the descriptions were only in German! I read what I could about the history of crime and crime punishment in Vienna, but honestly kind of a waste of time and money.

I walked along the Danube Canal and then met my tour guide for a 4pm walking tour of the history of Vienna. This tour was very intensive and extensive into Vienna’s very rich past. We walked a lot and saw many beautiful churches and historic buildings including St Augustine’s Church, St Stephan’s Cathedral, the Imperial Palace, the Spanish Riding School, the Holocaust Memorial, the State Opera, Ring boulevard, Museums Quartier, and so much more. We covered so much history and ended the tour 30 at a traditional Viennese cafe. I got a traditional apple strudel and a coffee.

The tour ended around 8 and I met up with Aishu (who I had met at the hostel yesterday) to grab some dinner. I wanted something cheap and easy, so we got some street food where I just got a chicken salad.

Talking and getting to know Aishu was very nice. We rode some scooters around before saying our goodbyes since she is leaving to Amsterdam tomorrow.

I got back to the hostel around 10:30 where I promptly put my things away and had a (very well deserved) relaxing night.

  1. I wonder how your experience compares to your dads. One of the only things I remember about his trip was he tried to do the running of the bulls. If I remember correctly, he ran a short distance then moved to the side and out of the way. Smart move!
